Our Valentine’s Day Country Couples

Country music is not only known for those heartbreaking, lonesome songs, but also for those positive, ‘I’m in love with you’ love songs.  The artists who sing country music aren’t much different than the songs they sing.  There are many couples who couldn’t make it work, but there are also those who ARE making it work. Here at Top Country we thought we’d celebrate Valentine’s Day by pointing out a few famous couples who are still in love (or we think so anyway) and will, most likely, be going out for a romantic dinner, together, tonight.  May they be as strong and as in everlasting love as Johnny and June were…

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill

How did they meet?

Tim McGraw met Faith Hill on the Spontaneous Combustion tour Tim headlined in 1996. Faith was his supporting act and was engaged to record producer Scott Hendricks at the time. Tim asked Faith to marry him in a jeep he brought on tour with him.

When did they tie the knot?

They married in the groom’s hometown of Rayville, Louisiana on October 6, 1996. It was Faith’s second marriage, her first to music publisher Daniel Hill ended in divorce in 1994.

Where is home?

The couple make their home just outside of Nashville, Tennessee and have three daughters Gracie (14), Maggie (13), and Audrey (10).

Fun Fact

Their last tour together (Soul 2 Soul II Tour 2006) was the highest grossing country tour in history raking in a whopping $90 million.

Carrie Underwood & Mike Fisher

How did they meet?

Mike Fisher is a professional hockey player, currently playing for the NHL’s Nashville Predators, natch. Singer Carrie Underwood met Mike when they were set up by friends backstage at a concert in Toronto in 2008.

Where was the wedding?

The Ritz Carlton, Reynolds Plantation, in Greensboro, Ga. in July 2010.

Fun Fact

Although, elated when Fisher was traded to the Predators, Underwood wasn’t quite as excited about making room in her closet for his things. She told TV talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres, “He came and he brought all of his crap with him. Our house became… he’s not a hoarder but he’s close, maybe.“ She continued, “He loves to shop. He’s going to kill me.”

Miranda Lambert & Blake Shelton

How did they meet?

Country stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert met in 2005, at CMT’s 100 Greatest Duets concert. Shelton was married to Kaynette Gern at the time. they were divorced in 2006.

Where was the wedding?

In Lambert’s home state of Texas at the Don Strange Ranch in Boerne, TX, May 2011.

Fun Fact

Miranda Lambert has revealed she set her sights on her now-husband Blake Shelton when she knew he was married. But Lambert says the chemistry between the pair was so clear that she couldn’t ignore it. She said,  ‘Everybody who watched us on stage that night said that there was something special there.”

Shelton added in a separate recent interview; “I’ve never had that kind of experience with anybody… I was a married guy, you know? Standing up there and singing with somebody and going, “Man, this shouldn’t be happening.” Looking back on that, I was falling in love with her, right there on stage.”

Lisa Brokop and Paul Jefferson – The Jeffersons

How did they meet?

Lisa Brokop and Paul Jefferson both moved to Nashville in 1993, Lisa from Surrey, BC and Paul from California. Both country singers, both songwriters too. They started dating after being introduced through mutual friends. First meeting was at a Starbucks.

 

Where were they married?

They said their vows in May 2008, just outside of Nashville.

Fun Fact

They now make music as the duo, The Jeffersons, and released their debut album in 2011.  They are the proud parents of their two-year old daughter Ivy.

Paul may be the only country artist with a degree in Bio-Engineering.  He graduated as an engineer from the University of California – Berkeley before moving to Music City.

Shawna & Keifer Thompson – Thompson Square

How did they meet?

Each moved to Nashville within the same week, in 1996, and met at a singing competition a few days after hitting town. “I walked in and saw her, went right up and started talking to her,” Keifer recalls. “She beat me in pool, and that’s where it started.”

When was the wedding?

May 1999

Where do they make their home?

Nashville, TN

Overnight success?

They each tried to make it as solo artists before they decided to become the duo Thompson Square. It took them 14 years (and many odd jobs in Music City) to land their first major record deal.

Fun Fact

The duo’s debut album was produced by members of Jason Aldean’s road band, who also play on the album. They are Tully Kennedy, Kurt Allison, David Fanning, and Rich Redmond.

Other Fun Fact

The duo’s smash hit, the Grammy nominated song, ‘Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not,’ was co-written by David Lee Murphy, who is well-known as the singer and songwriter of the 1995 #1 hit ‘Dust On The Bottle.’
