You’ve had an incredible year with the release of Gypsy Road, the success of Bring Down the House and the Road Trip Tour coming up this fall. Is there a moment that sticks out?

Seeing ‘Bring Down the House’ do so well has been a highlight of this year and this record. When Matt and I were working on the song, we thought we would make it a bonus track because it was so different. I didn’t think it would ever be a single. To see it blow up like this has been a career highlight.

What is your top piece of advice for country music’s rising stars?

Learn to write songs. It really empowers you as an artist and you are not as dependent on other people’s material to succeed. If you can learn to write your own songs it will be received better because it comes from you. Taylor Swift is an amazing example of that. People really connect with her music and with her. You can truly control your future and direction.

Is there anyone that you would like to collaborate with that you haven’t already?

Dwight Yoakam. It almost happened a few years ago, but the timing wasn’t right. That would be amazing.

What is something about you that most people don’t already know?

I love wandering around outside and working. I especially love building stuff whether it’s a rock wall or some timber structure. I also love soccer. It’s one of my favourite sports.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I hope I am still in Nova Scotia, writing and recording songs that not only mean something to me, but also to my fans. I hope to stay relevant and have longevity as an artist, and to stay on my fans’ journey with them.

Tell us a bit about the writing process:

I like to try different instruments including ones that I’ve never played before. It helps to get the creative juices running. If it’s not working, I put down the guitar and do something different. I try to always have fun. For me, music is a hobby instead of a demand.

The waterfront along Halifax Harbour is one of the best hangouts in the summer with its long meandering boardwalk bustling with shops and tall ships.
