Derek Drouin has won Canada’s first track and field medal at the London Olympics.
The 22-year-old from Sarnia, Ont., won bronze in men’s high jump on Tuesday, finishing in a three-way tie with Britain’s Robert Grabarz and Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim.
All three cleared 2.29 metres and all three missed three straight times at 2.33.
They secured the bronze medal position when Jamie Nieto of the U.S., missed twice at 2.33 then passed on the third try and skipped up to 2.36. When he missed there, he was relegated to sixth place because he had also missed previously at 2.29. The three bronze medallists had been clean through 2.29.
