It goes without saying that women are awesome. But in a society that can often undermine and push women down, or pit them against each other, it’s important to remind ourselves of this fact. Whether a housewife, a CEO, a teacher, an engineer, a mother, a daughter, a friend, or even a country superstar, women of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds are powerful and strong.

With International Women’s Day today, March 8, we thought we’d remind you just how powerful and strong women are with these awesome country songs about women being strong af. Featuring tunes by some of our favourite female country artists, sit back, hit play and revel in the girl power!

1. GIRL – Maren Morris

GIRL acknowledges the struggle while giving hope and inspiration.

Don’t you hang your head low/Don’t you lose your halo/Everyone’s gonna be okay, baby GIRL.

2. Catch Me If You Can – Jess Moskaluke

This powerful ballad is about taking off full force and chasing your dreams, while not letting anything or anyone hold you back.

I’ve got my head up high I taste it/I breathe it, I’m alive/Straight line to an open sky, it’s so clear/Now I’m getting this right/I feel the freedom inside/Finally have the life that should be mine/No more asking why

3. Miss Me More – Kelsea Ballerini

Your relationship with yourself should always come first. Sometimes it’s a fight, but it’s always worth it.

I forgot I had dreams/I forgot I had wings/Forgot who I was before I ever kissed you/And I thought I’d miss you/But I miss me more

4. Fall Down or Fly – Lindi Ortega

Another powerful ballad about facing adversity and never giving up. If this song doesn’t inspire you, I don’t know what will.

You said, girl you got a dream/Give it everything/You got to make ’em see/It was meant to be/Don’t you think you ought to give it one more shot?
You seen the glory and the shame/Beauty and the pain/Weakness and the strength/Waiting for the fame/Don’t you think you ought to give it all you got?

5. Alive – Madeline Merlo

An anthem dedicated to the wild and free. Merlo’s hit song is about getting out of your comfort zone, and not being afraid to take chances and to feel alive. It’s guaranteed to get stuck in your head all day.

I’ve been dreaming this dream forever/I’m finally waking up cause safety nets are just/Something that’s getting in the way/From making my own history/I’m breaking chains it’s got me singing

6. Buy My Own Drinks – Runaway June

This song is the definition of “I don’t need a man” 💁🏻‍♀️.

I can buy my own drinks/I can pay my own tab/And at the end of the night when they cut on all the lights, I can call my own cab/I can drop my own change in the jukebox/I can dance all by myself/’til I can stop thinkin’ bout, drinkin’ bout him/I don’t need nobody else/Yeah, I can buy my own drinks tonight

7. Guys Do It All The Time – Mindy McCready

A song that finally turns the tables. McCready’s catchy tune is about living life like a man – unapologetically!

Guys do it all the time/And you expect us to understand/When the shoe’s on the other foot/You know that’s when it hits the fan/Get over it, honey, life’s a two way street/Or you won’t be a man of mine/So I had some beers with the girls last night/Guys do it all the time

8. Man! I Feel Like a Woman – Shania Twain

The quintessential girl power country song. Even the video is badass, with Shania dressed head to toe in menswear, complete with a top hat, fronting an all-male guitar band. She taught us that it’s okay to make some noise and raise your voice!

No inhibitions, make no conditions/Get a little outta line/I ain’t gonna act politically correct/I only wanna have a good time/The best thing about bein’ a woman/Is the prerogative to have a little fun and/Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy, forget I’m a lady/Men’s shirts, short skirts/Oh, oh, oh, really go wild-yeah, doin’ it in style
