The snow is starting to melt, the days are getting longer and everything is starting to get a little bit more green. You know what that means? Yes, Spring is right around the corner.
After dealing with what feels like an eternity of winter, the first signs of spring are incredibly exciting. You’re probably feeling happy just thinking about all of the things you can do now that winter is finally kicking the bucket.
To help you in your quest for ultimate springtime glory, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best spring activities you can do with the whole family. Be warned: All of them involve copious amounts of fun.
1. Have a picnic
It’s true what they say, that we never really appreciate what we have until its gone. That saying goes for a lot of things, but in this instance, I’m talking about that green, green grass. When the snow peels back, and that first patch of soft and beautiful grass is revealed underneath, it’s a wonderful day. Celebrate the fact that you’ve got some colour back in your life by packing up a country lunch and going on a family picnic. Bring egg -salad sandwiches, watermelon and southern style iced tea. And don’t forget to pack the blanket!
2. Go to a baseball game
Springtime means the beginning of baseball season. Maybe you and your family have a favourite team that you cheer on year after year, or maybe you just want to go for the experience. Either way, grab yourself a hot dog, some nachos, and a big foam finger because nothing says “welcome back Spring” like a baseball game.
3. Play a game at the park
Maybe your family is less of a sports-watching family and more of a sports-playing family. If that’s the case, dust off the old baseball gear, soccer ball or football and go have a game at the park. After being cooped up inside all winter, your body – and your mind – will be so happy to run around and breath in the fresh spring air.
4. Start planning your garden
Not all country families live on the farm. If you’re trying to teach your kids about where their food comes from and how to live sustainably, a great place to start is with your backyard garden. It’s easy enough to grow your own herbs, fruits and vegetables, but you have to start early. Certain plants have cut-off dates for when they need to be planted by in order to be harvested in time, and a lot of those dates are actually in the spring, not the summer. Make gardening a family activity by letting each family member choose what they would like to grow and have each person be responsible for watering and caring for their own plants.
5. Visit a farm
Whether or not you already live on a farm, visiting one with farm animals is a fun outing for the whole family. Take a walk around, have lunch, soak in all of the beautiful sights around you and maybe even pet an animal or two! They will be happy to have some company after a long winter cooped up inside.
