As today I step away from my role as editor here on TopCountry, I have my final “Pick Of the Week”. It belongs to Blake Shelton‘s ‘Mine Would Be You’. This song encompasses everything that is great about country music. Great lyrics, great melody and great vocals and musicianship.
“What’s your worst hangover, your best night yet?
Your 90 proof, your Marlboro Red?
The best damn thing you lucked into
That’s easy girl, mine would be you
Mine would be you
Sun keeps shining, back road flying
Singing like crazy fools
Making up our own words
Laughing ’til it hurts
Baby, if I had to choose
My best day ever
My finest hour, my wildest dream come true
Mine would be you”
Named one of the favourites by many of Shelton’s peers in the industry such as Sheryl Crow and Cassadee Pope, the real story here is that it was written by one of our own, Deric Ruttan. The gap between Canadian country and Nashville country is getting smaller and smaller, which I couldn’t be more proud of. While it may not (yet) be a single on country radio, Shelton did sing the tune to thousands at the coveted CMA Music Festival. A test drive for single material? I sure hope so.
