A Q&A with Kortney & Dave

We know from CMT, but now they’re back with new music and they’re making a splash. Kortney & Dave‘s single ‘Marry Me Again’ is climbing the charts and recently went Top 40 on Canadian Country Mediabase charts. Their music video for the single now has over 25,000 views on YouTube and the song is connecting with fans right across the country. Top Country recently caught up with the duo to find out the scoop on everything Kortney & Dave.

Q

Your single ‘Marry Me Again’ recently went Top 40. How exciting is that for you guys?

A

It is CRAZY exciting. Music is where it all started for us and we feel like it has come full circle. We are so grateful that radio has been so supportive this early on. Makes us excited to record and write more music. We’ve been watching the charts each week, which we said we wouldn’t do but it’s so much more fun when your song is doing really well – ha.

Q

Is there a full length album in the works?

A

Yes. We have been writing a lot and we’ve planning for a summer 2013 release. Dates can always get moved around in this business but the constant need to write and record never changes. Although the release of the album is a ways away, we will be putting different songs up on our YouTube page very shortly.

Q

Who have been your biggest influences?

A

Dave – I have two that I often think of. The first is Robert Plant. Now that might seem strange but for the first ten years of my life the only music I heard in my house was Fiddle music. My Dad was in a old time Fiddle band and it was really all I was exposed to. One day a friend at school gave me a hand me down copy of Led Zepplin II and it was all over. I just wanted to sing like that guy and make records and rebel. Two outta three ain’t bad, I rebelled and made records. The second biggest influence I realized only a few years ago. My wife Kortney. You may know her. She encouraged me to write better songs and sing what was honest. She also single handedly got this rock guy to turn country.
Kortney – This is a tough one for me because I have been influenced by different people at different stages in my life. I really don’t consider the Mini ops my biggest influence but they ruled my world when I was 10. Dolly Parton and Allison Krauss were probably my biggest female country music influences. On the pop side I listen to a lot of Marc Cohn, Tracy Chapman and Shelby Lynn. They are all really rootsy and my go to on a sad and rainy day. Dave laughs and thinks that my choice of music can be a little depressing but then he complains when I put my current pop music choices on the ipod. We differ a little in this area.

Q

What’s your favourite musical memory?

A

Kortney One of my favorite and earliest musical memories is when I was just around 7 or 8 years old. I was selected to present flowers to Tony Bennett on stage after his sold out show in Sudbury Ontario. I didn’t really know who he was at the time but I sang “My Favorite Things” to him. I look back now and I’m even more grateful for the experience.

Q

What’s coming up that fans should look forward to?

A

We are working on a ton of new music for the world to hear (if they are listening – ha). We are also working on a new TV show idea that we hope to see to fruition. It’s been an exciting few years and we want to built on what Dave, myself and the fans have created together. Without them, we wouldn’t have an audience.

TC’s Fun 5

Kortney:
Favourite season? – Fall. Our fall season in Nashville isn’t as pretty as Canada but it is longer. I love the smells of the air, the cooler weather (but not too cold) and the fun layering that I get to do with my clothes.
Sweet or salty? – Definitely both at the same time. Salted nuts with smarties. YUM!
Beach or mountains? – Can I say both again? Okay, well if I had to pick one I would say the beach. I love looking out and seeing water with no end in site. It makes me feel like there is so much more out there to see and do.
The one chore you hate to do? – I don’t mind doing laundry and even folding it but I despise having to put it away.
Pasta or pizza? – My body doesn’t like pasta but if it did, I would eat it a lot more. I LOVE noodles!

Dave:
Favourite season? – Winter because it’s one of the things I miss about being in Canada. We don’t really get a ‘true’ winter in TN.
Sweet or salty? – Salty. Salt and Vinegar chips
Beach or mountains? Beach. The beach means you are on the ocean and the ocean seems like the most powerful thing on earth.
The one chore you hate to do? – Kortney hates to put the laundry away, but I hate to fold it.
Pasta or pizza? – Pizza. There was a time in my life that I lived on the stuff.
