ARTIST: Gary Allan
ALBUM: Set You Free
LABEL: MCA Nashville / Universal Music
RATING: 4.5/5

Gary Allan is back…. and he’s back with something to say. Allan has dealt with personal loss and heartbreak over the last several years, most notably when his wife committed suicide in 2004. It seems Gary Allan has a new lease on life and has finally set free all the pain. The album’s lead single ‘Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)’ recently went number 1.

The album overall is a diverse, deep collection of songs that make you feel something, which is exactly why music is made in the first place. Songs like ‘Sand In My Soul’ and ‘It Ain’t The Whiskey’ showcase just how great Allan’s distinct voice is and how he can deliver a heartfelt, complex ballad.

Others like ‘Bones’, ‘No Worries’ and ‘Drop’ explore different sides of Allan that we’ve never seen before. It’s as if at this point in the game, over 15 years into his career, Gary Allan is reinventing himself, yet pulling out the sides of him we’ve always known and blending them perfectly together.

Plain and simple, this is one for the music collection. Money well spent, front to back.
