Reviewed: Tim Hicks’ “5:01”

Review By: Shenieka Russell-Metcalf

Artist: Tim Hicks
Album: 5:01
Label: RGK Entertainment

Rating: 4.5/5

The Niagara region is known for many things but Tim Hicks should top the list, after listening to his second album 5:01 you will understand why. His twelve track effort shows his growth as a musician, singer and songwriter.

Hicks started off strong with his lead single “Here Comes The Thunder ” — I’m sure you have heard it on your local radio station because it’s getting a lot of airtime due to it’s catchy, fun and rockin’ vibe.

He slows it down with “She Don’t Drink Whiskey and ” Ready to Say Goodnight” featuring fellow Canadian Madeline Merlo. He bring us home with his tune “You Know You’re Home” and gives us a song that should be added to the Top Country Truck Songs PlaylistCalling All Trucks“.

My favourite on the album is “A Little Drinkalong” featuring his friends from Blackjack Billy and Clayton Bellamy. The song shows his Canadian pride with shout outs to The Guess Who, The Tragically Hip, The Blue Jays and the late great Stompin’ Tom Connors. This will be the new drinking song at many colleges and universities across the country, plus it’s a hell of a tune for long weekend playlist. Another song you will want to add to your playlist is his version of  “My Baby” originally done by Kix Brooks.

Hicks had a very successful 2013 with his first album Throw Down which was released last summer, it produced many hits including “Hell Raisin’ Good Time“, “Get By” and my personal favourite “Stronger Beer“. This year looks like it will be just as amazing for Tim as he has been nominated for four Canadian Country Music Association Awards for Rising Star, Album of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and CMT Video of the Year.

5:01 can be purchased at your local music store or downloaded from iTunes. You can also see him perform live, here’s a list of his upcoming tour listings. Let Tim know you support him and his new album by using the hashtag #FIVE01 on social media.
