Q&A: Kylee Epp, 2012 CCMA FanFest Performer

The Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) recently did a contest that sent one regional artist to perform at the national convention in Saskatoon during Country Music Week on September 8 at FanFest. Kylee Epp took the crown based on fan votes. Yet, I’m sure some of you are wondering – who is Kylee Epp?

Kylee recently released her first single, ‘Be Your Girl’ off her upcoming EP. You probably would be interested to know as well, that she toured for a couple of years singing backups and playing acoustic guitar for Jessie Farrell. She also appeared in a couple of her music videos. Now, Kylee is continuing on her own musical journey, with a music video of her own that will debut on CMT Canada this Monday (you can view the video below).

Kylee will also take part in the CCMA New Aritst Showcase on Thursday September 6 in Saskatoon. More info available at: ccma.org.

TC recently caught up with Kylee and asked her a few questions:

Q

Where were you when you found out about winning the CCMA FanFest spot?

A

I was in the studio with my producer John Ellis. We we’re recording background vocals and fiddle tracks that day for my new EP. I had been anxious all morning and then the call came in! I was so excited to hear the news I skipped into the studio and gave everyone a hug! Quickly, I called all my friends and family but then it was back to work! We proceeded had a very productive day in the studio from then on!

Q

Who is your biggest musical influence?

A

Sheryl Crow is one of my favourites. I have been listing to her records since I was a little girl. Some of the first songs I learned to play on my guitar we’re “Everyday is a Winding Road” and “Oh Marie.” Obviously I was into the self titled Sheryl Crow recored at the time! As a female in music, she is a brilliant songwriter, beautiful, and puts on a rocking live show!

Q

An album is obviously in the works, do we have an expected release date yet?

A

Yes I have an EP in the works! The exact release date in not yet set, but it’s looking like late September or early October.

Q

Biggest career highlight this far?

A

Hmm, there have been so many so far. The New Artist Showcase, CCMA FanFest, they just keep happening! But at this moment I am really excited to have my debut music video for my single “Be Your Girl” premiering on CMT next monday! I have been watching music videos all my life and it is just crazy to think that now I have one in the rotation too!

Q

Favourite place you’ve seen while touring across Canada?

A

Anywhere with mountain I can run around in! I love heading to places like Banff or Jasper anytime of year for a show. If I have some time off I will hit the slopes or find a great trail to explore!
