CANADIAN COUNTRY ARTIST YOAN NAMED “ARTIST OF THE YEAR” AT THE 2016 INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS
16TH ANNUAL “INDIE AWARDS” CELEBRATES THE BEST OF INDEPENDENT MUSIC AS PART OF 34th ANNUAL CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK
CMA Award winner Yoan has much to celebrate after being named “Artist of the Year” at the 2016 Independent Music Awards, which took place at Toronto’s iconic Phoenix Concert Theatre as part of the 34th annual Canadian Music Week (CMW) on May 4th. Besting such internationally recognized acts as Carly Rae Jepsen, City and Colour and Grimes to take home the INDIE award, the win was met with both surprise and grace from the Quebec-born artist.
“I just won Artist of the Year at the INDIE Awards,” said the 20-year-old singer-songwriter. “I want to thank all my fans who supported me, voted for me and most of all believed in me. I am forever grateful. Thank you Indie88 and Canadian Music Week!”
Bursting onto the Canadian country scene in 2015 with his self-titled debut album, Yoan’s incredible rise has been nothing short of amazing. The eponymous album has currently sold over 130k copies and was named the “Top Selling Canadian Album of the Year” at the 2015 CCMA Awards. Placing 7th on Billboard Canada’s Top 50 best-selling albums in 2015, second only to Drake for Canadians who made the list, “Yoan” was also the best selling album in Quebec last year.
Yoan’s widely successful Quebec tour saw the young artist break records across the province, as both the youngest Quebec artist to play a solo show at Montreal’s Bell Centre and as the first Quebec solo artist to take the stage at Quebec City’s brand new Videotron Centre. This fall, fans can look forward to the release of a live concert DVD filmed during the Quebec City date, featuring special appearances from two of Canada’s premiere country acts – Dean Brody and Brett Kissel.
