Q
What was it like touring with Rascal Flatts this summer?
A
It’s been a huge learning experience because I’ve never been on a country tour before and I’m picking up a lot of tips from watching Flatts and The Band Perry. They both have their own different styles on stage but there’s a certain energy that they bring to that show that I find really endearing and captivating so I just watch them every night and I pick up some pointers.
Q
Has anything really strange happened to you while you’ve been on tour?
A
Nothing that strange … It’s really interesting to see the amount of growth in the fan base. After The Band Perry’s set I go out and I do a signing until Rascal Flatts starts their set and I’m seeing more and more people show up to the meet and greets and it’s getting a little intense, almost not doable anymore but it’s really crazy to see that growth, it’s amazing.
Q
So your album releases on October 8th, can you tell me a bit about the process of creating it?
A
I went down to Nashville in January, wrote for about two months straight and then I started to go on my first radio tour so in the middle of doing the radio tour I was recording at the same time. It was incredible I wrote half the album, the other half are songs that I took from outside writers that I love and I wish I wrote them, they are just incredible songs. I also got to do the album with Dan Huff, who is incredible and he and I have a great chemistry when we are in studio together. He comes from a pop/rock world and that’s kind of where I come from and so we both have those influences and we both came from similar backgrounds so it’s really cool.
Q
Is there a particular song on your album you’re particularly proud of?
A
I’m really proud of “11”, it’s a song I wrote about my parents’ divorce when I was eleven. It’s probably the most personal song I’ve ever written and I’ve been getting such an amazing reaction. I put it on iTunes just as a track to get people excited for the album and it’s crazy how many people can relate, how many people have gone through a divorce, either themselves or their parents.
Q
Why did you decide to call the album Frame By Frame?
A
The title Frame By Frame was picked by me because I feel like every song paints such a vivid picture, there’s a lot of imagery in the lyrics. I love when songs paint that scene and you’re there in that moment and every song on the album does that. It’s just such an emotional roller coaster ride, it’s like a movie and I just feel like everything is very black and white, you can tell exactly what it is.
Q
What has been the most memorable moment to date in your career?
A
The most memorable moment to date would have to be winning The Voice. That was such a huge moment for me and it changed my life forever, that’s why I’m here right now and it also validated the fact that fans liked me and people chose me to win a show like that, it made me gain a little bit of confidence which is nice.
