I’m very excited about the single I’m an Open Road.
To me, it’s all about the hero in the song wanting to rescue someone who is struggling with allowing herself to be rescued. There’s a tension in this song that I think a lot of people feel. We all want to be independent and do things on our own, to not involve others and to have our privacy. But at the same time, we realize we need to be in a community with others to survive. I wrote this song with multiple Juno award-winning artist, Sebell. I loved the track when it was recorded, but the lyrics went through about three revisions before we finally settled on what you hear now. I love it, but this song really made us work for it. For me, it has a fresh, new sound to it, while loosely following the roadmap of songs like Leavin’ (on which Keith Urban appears courtesy of Capitol Records), and Didn’t Even See the Dust. It was a thrill working with the talented reigning CCMA© Female Artist of the Year, Jess Moskaluke on this song as well. I think that she’s the most talented female vocalist Canada has seen in a long time, and I’m so thankful she agreed to be a part of this song; she really takes it to a higher level.

What is it like being female in the country music industry?

It’s tough! There is no denying that. But I think being an artist of either gender in today’s industry allows for a lot of creative freedom, and I’ve been focusing more on that than I have on the challenges of being female. Good music is good music, and I think if you release the best songs you possibly can, you’ll see a lot of love from fans and radio.

How does it feel to be at the top of the Canadian country music industry?

Well, I don’t know if I’m quite qualified to speak on this topic yet! [Laughs] But I have certainly had a busy year since my first CCMA win, and I’ve been trying to use that momentum to my advantage. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this industry is a big family and I love being a part of it. That’s what it feels like right now.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

This is so hard to answer. If you had asked me this question five years ago, I would never have guessed I would be where I am today. I can definitely say that in five years I’ll still be making music. How about that? [Smiles]

Do you have any news for us?

I’ve got an album coming out September 25, a single (Kiss Me Quiet) coming out September 14, and a few tour dates on the Road Trip tour with Paul Brandt and Dean Brody!
