Fresh Find: Jaida Dreyer

FF_Jaida-Dreyer

Arguably one of the freshest, most distinctive voices on country radio today, Thunder Bay native Jaida Dreyer sat down with TC to talk about her recent success.

Q

Your new single ‘Half Broke Horses’ recently hit Top 20 here in Canada. We understand that’s a personal song for you. Is it that much sweeter because it’s so personal?

A

It is, most definitely. It wasn’t the easiest song for me to write, but this was an important part of my story and I felt that if I didn’t have a song on my debut record touching on that particular piece of my past, I wouldn’t be being honest with myself or with the listeners. The record just wouldn’t have been complete without it. It’s been a pretty cool thing to see people connect with it in such a meaningful way.

Q

Your album dropped just over a month ago, what’s your favorite track on the album. Why?

A

I wrote or co-wrote everything on this album, so that’s like asking a mother to choose her favorite child. I’ll say though, track number 3, “If That’ll Make You Love Me” is probably one of my favorite songs that I’ve written up to this point.

Q

Favorite musical memory so far?

A

Playing the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman. In my eyes, standing in that circle has always been the nucleus of success in the country music world and the Ryman is just the place to be. I would move in if I could. I wonder if they’d let me rent a row of pews? Some of you guys should inquire as well, we could be roomies.

Q

Who’s been your biggest influence?

A

Life on the road and the vast array of dysfunctional characters I’ve met along the way. Moments in my life. Headlines. Catch phrases.

Q

Your witty humor draws a lot of attention on social media outlets. Not a lot of female artists stand out that way. Where did you learn to be so funny?

A

I don’t think it’s something I learned. A lot of my humor comes from just being honest and whatever’s bouncing back and forth between my ears at the time, without much of a filter.

TC’s Fun 5

3. Favorite city? – Whatever city is playing my single the most.
