The winter season is upon us, which means that you will likely be spending more time inside than usual. Unfortunately, there is only so much Netflix you can watch, or mystery novels you can read before the boredom bug strikes again.
This is the perfect time of the year to take up a new hobby you haven’t had time for. Maybe you’ve been wanting to try your hand at knitting or cross-stitching. Bonus points, if you have a grandma who can teach you how to do these things. Maybe you want to learn a new skill like photography, video production or editing. Maybe you want to clean out your house top to bottom, including all the pesky places you’ve been avoiding like your kitchen cupboards and bedroom closet. Or maybe you want to combine a few of those things and make yourself an awesome keepsake to boot!
One of the biggest culprits of unnecessary closet space are old t-shirts. College shirts, sports shirts, shirts depicting your love and devotion for your favourite bands and artists. It’s hard to get rid of these things when they embody some of your greatest memories – your time spent in residence, your first time at the Super Bowl, the time you finally got to see Shania Twain live in concert after years of trying to snag tickets.
Perhaps the best way to free up some space in your closet, but also keep and display these special shirts is by making a DIY t-shirt quilt.
You can make one for yourself, but it would also be an amazing gift idea. Christmas, birthdays and Valentine’s Day are just a few of the holidays that surround the winter season. Why not give the gift of warmth, while creating something sentimental and one of a kind for your loved ones to cherish forever.
You can use any t-shirts you choose, but to make it a country quilt use plaids, flannels, and country concert tees. It’s the perfect addition to your cozy cabin or your favourite spot by the fireplace.
A t-shirt quilt is a great way to pass the time this winter, plus, once you’re finished you will have something to snuggle and keep warm with! Plus, it will feel pretty darn good to say that you’ve created something tangible with your own two hands.
The directions are super simple and easy to follow, and you probably have most of the supplies in your house already. Watch this step by step video tutorial and learn how to sew your own t-shirt quilt.
If you’re anything like me and can’t use a needle and thread or sewing machine to save your life, you can opt for the no sew version of the quilt.
This t-shirt blanket simply requires a regular fleece blanket, your old t-shirts, scissors, a ruler and glue or adhesive spray. After you select the shirts you want to use, you cut them into squares and place on the blanket where you would like them to go. Once you have everything laid out, you just spray the adhesive onto the blanket and press the t-shirt down in place. Voila! A simple and easy way to make a memory that will last a lifetime.
