Olympic Spotlight 6: Paula Findlay (Triathlon)

‘Sadder than I’ve ever been. Thanks for the love. Life goes on.’ — Tweet by Canada’s Paula Findlay (@PaulaFindlay)

Paula Findlay just barely competed in the women’s triathlon final on Saturday.

LONDON — It was awful to watch. Paula Findlay gulping down tears, her face melting into a mask of pain and humiliation, trying to finish last. Her legs were dead, she said. She didn’t know why, but they were dead, and she forced herself to finish the Olympic triathlon, because that was all she had left. So she ran and wept and screamed inside, and she finished the race. She said she was sorry.

Canada’s most decorated triathlete Simon Whitfield says that his teammate Paula Findlay was not properly treated for a nagging hip injury during her training for the 2012 London Olympics.

At only 23, Edmonton’s Paula Findlay is an expert in the sport of triathlon. She began first as a swimmer at age 10 then she joined her high school track club at 15 and tried her first triathlon a few years later, and the rest is history.

She won the first three ITU World Championship Series events of the 2011 season in Sydney, Madrid, and Kitzbühel. At that time, she was ranked 1st in the world by the International Triathlon Union. Due to a hip injury, Findlay has not competed since the IT World Championship Grand Final in Beijing, China on September 9, 2011.

Findlay will be competing along with fellow Canadian triathlete Kathy Tremblay.
